More than two miles of walls surround the “Old City” in modern Jerusalem. They were ordered built by the Ottoman ruler Suleiman I in the 16th century. Within Suleiman’s walls, a living city of priests and imams and rabbis overflows with the bubbling cacophony of praying in Hebrew, Arabic, Armenian, and Greek. Outside, south-east of its walls, lies the City of David, birthplace of the city.
